Virgil Abloh is The New Louis Vuitton Menswear Designer

The Off-White founder succeeds Kim Jones as the new artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear.

He becomes the first designer of colour to hold such a high profile position as Louis Vuitton is recognized as the #1 luxury fashion brand.

Michael Burke, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO, praised how Abloh’s “innate creativity and disruptive approach have made him so relevant, not just in the world of fashion but in popular culture today” It seems Abloh was prepared for this as he told The New York Times that he’s compiling an eight-page “brand manual” to “define new codes” at LV.

Abloh's inspiring rise to the top as a designer with no formal training in fashion continues. He told Business of Fashion in 2016 that “the end goal is to modernise fashion and steer a [fashion] house, because I believe in the modernisation of these storied brands. LV will be hoping Abloh brings the hype, culture and fanbase that got him this far, as he attempts to bridge the gap between luxury and streetwear fashion.

Abloh will continue with Off-White as he designs solely menswear at Louis Vuitton. He told The New York Times “Off-White is for the 17-year-old version of myself, whereas Vuitton is for the 37-year-old I am today” He debuts his first collection in June.
